The BEST of the Books from ALL of the Publishers!
Talks & INSET
Despite the early start, the weather and the ring road, the Holiday Inn offered a safe and warm refuge for teachers and librarians looking for information, explanation and inspiration, to say nothing of the best selection of children's books in the county/country/universe! Here's how events unfolded, with some feedback from some of our 150 eager delegates!
Our 5th Conference - 15th November 2016
.
The first of our keynote speakers, Dr Wayne Tennent, focused attention on the fascinating and complex process of learning to read. 'The talk by Wayne Tennent reminded me of the complex process behind reading - so easy to forget when bogged down in the classroom.' 'Lots of food for thought.' 'Brilliant.'
This year, AF Harrold joined the distinguished list of pre-prandial poets who have traditionally got our poetic and digestive juices flowing as we approached lunch and the time for browsing and networking - an important element of our conference and much appreciated by delegates. It's hard to resist buying a book and getting it signed by the authors so the 'signing table' was kept busy - even more exciting is when the authors have the opportunity to talk about themselves and their writing as Jeanne Willis and Tony Ross demonstrated so ably. 'Could have listened to them for hours.' 'Loved the format of their conversation.'
The day ended with an inspirational talk by Nicola Morgan which gave much food for thought. Then - thanks, farewells and out into the cold - but as one delegate said 'It was lovely to spend hours in a world I want to live in.'
Here's a few other comments from our delegates:

'The combination of inspirational authors and well researched theory put forward by experts was excellent.'

'The most useful part was being able to look at books with no pressure - and such a wide variety.'

'An excellent, well planned day which was paced well - plenty of time for refreshments, signing and talking.'

If you'd like more information about our
Speakers and Workshop Leaders,
here's where you can find them online:
We were delighted to welcome Meg Rosoff and hear her wise words and comments on world affairs, notably the President-Elect.
'Always a privilege to meet authors, have time to explore the fantastic range of books, and celebrate the joy of reading with children.'
The workshop sessions provided ideas and resources to take back to school as well as a chance to move around and talk about what had gone before. With workshops on drama, poetry, engaging with texts, story writing and making, the importance of using high quality texts was reinforced.

Feedback from individual workshops:

Bob Cox
'Very practical and useful.'
'Accessibility to quality texts - good way to introduce these.'
A.F. Harrold
'Lots of ideas to use in class and I will be using them.'

Sarah Gallagher
'Thoroughly enjoyed creating books as it is a good starting point for getting the children to enjoy writing.'

Phil Earle
'Great ideas which would really appeal to boys particularly.'
'Engaging and inspiring.'
'Exceptional - THE most inspirational part of the day.'

Patrice Baldwin
'So many ideas for drama linked with talk for writing. I can't wait to try this with the teachers and children.'
'Hands on, interactive, good to move.'

Nicola Morgan
'Lots of research to read about and absorb.'
'Lots to think about and follow up on.'
